«Apnea»
The European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design & Environmental Studies present and
invite you to the opening of the contemporary art exhibition “Apnea”, on Friday 10
March, at the European Centre Athens, 74 Mitropoleos Street, Plaka, from 18.00 to 21.00

*apnea: The term “apnea” is used to describe the suspension of breathing. In water sports, the term refers to the voluntary holding of breath by keeping the face below the surface of the water.Apnea or calm in both meteorology and shipping is characterized by the complete lack of wind.
The exhibition is dedicated to the island of “underwater heroes and sponge divers” – where the world’s first woman dived with a diving board, where sailors discovered the Antikythera mechanism.Symi, on its small but revealing scale, is a typical example of cultural stratification, where an ancient Greek underwater world like a temple quietly becomes a foundation.
Furthermore, the Apnea exhibition offers a platform for contemporary artists to experiment with the theme of apnea in new and innovative ways. Through their art, these artists explore the multifaceted meanings of apnea, from the suspension of breathing to the absence of air in an underwater environment, the idea of timelessness and transcendence of the natural world.
Connecting the Antikythera Mechanism with contemporary artistic practice, Apnea offers a unique perspective on both ancient mechanics and contemporary artistic creation. By exploring the intersection between these two worlds, the exhibition creates a space for reflection and contemplation, inviting visitors to consider the many ways in which technology and art can intersect and influence each other in time and space.
The exhibition is open to all artistic practices (painting, sculpture, printmaking, mosaic, photography, installation, coding art, AI-Artificial Intelligence art , Sound art, video art, 3D art, animation, performance, lectures, etc.) and encourages experimental approaches within a creative context.
